The Bible makes it clear, many are called but few are chosen. This is such an exciting time in the COC. We are growing, beginning new ministries, developing leaders, baptising new converts, and the list goes on and on. Before you read this page, let us tell you about a unique COC policy called the One Church per City policy.

One Church per City: If you take a few moments to read the New Testament, and the Apostolic Fathers plus other early church documents, one aspect about church government becomes clearer, there was only one church per city, and if the city was large enough to have a bishop, then there was only 1 bishop per city as well. Later Canons addressed this issue of multiple bishops in a metropolitan area, thus they became known as Metropolitan bishops, or simply Metroplitans, with the Canons forbidding more than one Bishop per metropolitan area.
Without going into great detail here about the historical evidence, we will simply explain our method of church government in this regard. Each city, or Metropolitan area is permitted to contain only 1 singular church. A modern day protestant example is that of Dr. David Yongi Cho in Seoul, Korea. His church of almost 1 million members has thousands of satellite locations that meet during the week for personal ministry all over the area, and only on Sunday do they get together in the main sanctuary to hear the pastors message. This example can be seen in Scripture, as they went to the temple and also met in each others homes, and later the mainly Gentile churches followed this example, coming together in each others homes, and meeting together as a corporate body on Sunday to celebrate the Eucharist together and hear the word of instruction from the priest.
This has a direct impact on your ministry. Since we can only allow 1 senior priest and church per city, it means that those who join the COC in the beginning stages have an advantage over those who come later, if they want to live in the same city. Of course, certain cities, such as New York, Los Angeles, London and others would require more than one parish, but we have set geographical and population boundries to limit the number of parishes in even these large cities.
This provides many advantages over the practice of planting dozens and sometimes hundreds of the same church types in cities. Not only are there often times many churches of similiar types in a city, but even hundreds from the same denomination will be in the same city. In our practical design, the One Church per City method provides for a better use of resources and gives a greater opportunity for ministry by each individual. If you have ever seen the attempts at getting multiple churches together to attempt some citywide effort, and the resulting chaos and turf wars, then you can appreciate the simplicity of our design. With one large central church, there will not be the resulting dilution of materials, financial and human, that comes with many smaller churches. By also utilizing the home group, or small group method of personal pastoral care, then each individual gets personal mentorship and care. This will also allow for more of the church to use their gifts, by being personally involved in these smaller groups as they learn and discover their own talents and callings.
This means that our selection process has gotten more indepth than in the past. Gone are the days of promises without follow through by those who contact us. It is not impossible to be ordained in the COC, in fact, we think that it is very possible. Our Apostolic Success and Assistance Program is designed to help you succeed in ministry. You don't have to have a doctorate degree, or pastored a 500 member church before coming to us. All we want to see is a teachable spirit, a strong committment to the vision and the willingness to work in the harvest field. Our way is different from anything you have ever experienced before. This means that there will be a time of adjustment for you in the beginning.
How long does it take? It will take between 3 and 24 months for you to be fully integrated into ministry in the COC, the length of time is mainly up to you. The initial application phase only takes about 30 days. After that time, you will begin a probationary period that will be appropriate to your experience and educational levels. You will begin some form of ministry or ministry preparation immediately following your application phase. You are not required to spend endless months or years in seminary to become a COC priest. Ministry is what the COC is all about, ministry comes first. However, depending on your background, while you are learning and expanding your wings in ministry, you will have much to learn about early christianity and the COC. You will do both at the same time. Your completion of assigned ministry projects are just as important as your knowledge of those things related to the church. If you are already in full time or part time ministry now, we will work together to make the transistion as smooth as possible. We are already experienced in bringing prexisting ministries, with congregations and property into the COC, this experience will help us in helping you make the transition with your members much easier.
