That the Bible is the inspired word of God given to the prophets as HE the Holy Spirit spoke to them.
That the Holy Spirit operates today as He did in the early church and throughout history. His word says that He does not change, but is the same yesterday, today and forever. That He will never leave us or forsake us, and will be with us in the form of the Holy Spirit to lead and guide and teach us all things, even those things which are to come.
We may easily judge truth, when we know Who the truth is. Truth is an absolute. It is not a what, or when or how, but a Who. For He, the Spirit of Truth will guide you. How can you know if your belief system is true? The Holy Spirit never changes, He operates as He always has. Calling men to repentance, confirming His power with signs and wonders and showing mercy to those who humble themselves and turn from their wicked ways. Are you concerned if you are being taught the truth? Then search the Scriptures, how does God act in the situation in Scripture? Is what you are being taught the same? What does church history show us? How does the Holy Spirit operate throughout Church History? You will find, with a little research, that He has not changed, and does not change. There is nothing new under the sun, so the Scriptures tell us. If you find that your present belief system, is not the same as found in Scripture, as the early church taught, as the historical testimony of the actions of the Holy Spirit in men's lives, then you have a choice. You may continue with your present course, or you may take St Apostle Paul's warning, that all who teach a different gospel or different Jesus are cursed.
The COC is not a communion that follows after supernatural signs. Instead we believe in the words of Christ found in Holy Scripture, that the signs follow the true believers. Not everything that is purported to be of the Holy Spirit is; as has always been the case, the devil comes to deceive, even the very elect if it were possible. It therefore becomes very important that the five fold ministry be active in the church, and in fact in each local community of believers, and that as a body, thus the very body of Christ himself on earth, we shall exercise the discernment of spirits and not allow the adversary to walk freely among us.
We believe that the church has always been at war with satan. We also believe that the church must find herself ready for the coming final battle. Far too many believe that it is far away, never to be seen in our lifetime. That only fanatics concern themselves with such things. This is to their detriment. Christ told us to be watchful, not to become lax in such matters, but ever watching, lest that day catch us unaware. There are 10 virgins waiting for the coming of the Lord, 5 are ready, 5 are not, those 5 who are not prepared are thrown outside with the rest who are overcome with the weeping and gnashing of their teeth.
To restore the idea of the social gospel, as our Lord Christ gave the example with the good Samaritan. To remember that when we have done it to the least of these, we have done it to HIM. That just feeding a hungry mouth is not enough, we must feed his soul, and we must also try to teach him how to fish, and not just hand him a fish.
To help each Christian realize that they were created by God with a purpose in mind and to help them rediscover that purpose and to accomplish it with the help of God. Thus edifying God and helping to spread the Gospel of Christ and in so doing find meaning to their lives. In early christianity this was called Theosis.
To be liberal in spirit without accepting the liberal ideas of the modern secular world. To love our neighbors and to forgive them their sins as our Lord forgives us. But at the same time not tolerating the sin itself. To stand against the marriage of homosexuals or the ordination of homosexuals. To stand against the horror of Abortion and those who would allow similar sins into the church, and treat them as normal. But we must remember that we are not to judge the world, but to love it into a saving relationship with Christ.
That any Christian who can affirm
the Nicene and Apostles Creed are to be considered brothers and sisters
in Christ as long as their lives are lived in accordance with Scripture
and historical church teaching, are not in heresy and most importantly
have evidence of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that is given to all
believers.
That salvation is ONLY possible
through Jesus Christ but that our organization is not the only way to heaven.
Regarding the ordination of women, we believe that Scriptural and historical evidence exists for women to serve as Deacons, including evangelists, prophets, and teachers but not as priests or bishops. As such, within biblical guidelines we encourage the full participation of the sisters in the active life of the community of believers.
Baptism is a vital step in a Christians life, a command of Christ to the church and a must for membership in a local congregation, as well as a public confession of Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior. We hold to the traditional orthodox and early church method for baptism by total immersion in water in the form of the Trinity, while remembering the words of the Apostles in the Didache and allowing pouring in case of cold climate or other local need.
That it is time to remember that the Church was built on the blood of the martyrs. Too many today allow jobs, friends and family, government regulations, fear of financial problems and other deceptions of the enemy to silence their testimony. That a great deal of the saints gave their very lives in defense of the cause of Christ. Even today, many still have this choice to make. And more will be required to make that choice as the Day draws near. Let us prepare ourselves now. Let us, as St Peter and the early church, ask of God for Boldness to preach His gospel. What is the one difference between the church before Pentecost and afterwards. Not signs and wonders, for Peter walked on water before, they cast out demons and healed the sick. But after Pentecost, they were emboldened to spread the gospel at all costs. But too many of us today, act like St Peter and the other followers before Pentecost, we operate in fear, we allow the cars of life to cause us to be quite. Boldness Lord, grant unto your servants boldness!
We believe in living the teachings of Paul and the canons. Too many who call themselves christians, are involving themselves in nothing more than ethnic drunken and gambling debaucheries. Church sponsored 'parties' advertised as ethnic gatherings, where the church sells beer, promotes and profits from gambling and allows unclean talk and unwholesome activities all in the name of the church.
Our goal is to include everyone as long as sin is understood to be shunned. As the early church got together in Jerusalem to decide the fate of circumcision, so we follow their example. We do not wish to add any undue burden to our brothers and sisters in Christ except a faith in Christ and a turn from sin.
The Charismatic Orthodox Church is neither eastern or western in practice. We are however eastern in our theology and spiritual focus. And as with all Orthodox commuions, we reflect the geographical area in which we live. Our communion is still very young, but growing each month as the Lord directs. The COC is not presently in communion with the mainline recognized Orthodox jurisdictions. This does not mean that we do not desire this step, it is just that we are young and things such as that take time. Our goal is to be a bridge among the different walks of Christian faith. And we shall walk this journey less traveled as the Lord Jesus guides us. The COC is also in talks with some of the protestant and other evangelical groups, working towards establishing ties to other parts of the body of Christ. We are not protesting anything about the mainline Orthodox churchs. We do not deride anyone in the body of Christ. Our goal is to be an encouragement to others, not one that tears down. At this time we can offer our priests Apostolic Succesion and we praise God for this development. We are trying to appeal to a large audience of the body of Christ, but we make strong efforts to remain true to the Faith of the Apostles. While it is true that as a whole we are somewhat minimalistic in our Liturgical and Sacramental worship, let there be no doubt as to our faith. We are fully Orthodox in spiritual thought. Also let there be no doubt about our Charismatic side either. It is the firm opinion of the COC that the very thing we recognize the Saints of the church for, is their charismatic walk with God. With these words we greet you with a christian kiss and ask Gods blessing be upon you.
