OHGR RELEASE DATE
Update::: Corey

In other news the original runs of the Tear Garden's Eye Spy... and Skinny Puppy's Back and Forth Six have sold out. As with the previous vault sell-outs, a digipak 'version 2' of each these albums is now underway.
April 16, 2003
A few teasing peaks at the long rumored second album from ohGr are coming through. No, we do not have a release date yet. However, the ohGr section of the Spitfire website is now graced with some new images, including some photos and what appears to be the album's cover. This finally gives us a title: Sunnypsyop. The official ohGr website now features a new section punningly titled 'Deux Time', sporting an animated graphic from the aforementioned album cover and the word "imminent". A recent article on Steven R. Gilmore in the magazine XLR8R features a piece of his recent work in a very similar style and mentions his contribution to a recent project of Ogre's. Clearly SRG, Skinny Puppy's standard album artist for many years, has come back into the fold and contributed to this new record.
The aforementioned article, appearing in issue 66, features a great deal of Gilmore's work for Nettwerk including many SP and related sleeves. His work with SP is mentioned quite a bit in the interview and there is a lengthy quote from Ogre regarding SRG's work.

i’m looking forward to hearing this disc and assuming it’s anywhere near as good as their last two releases is should receive heavy rotation on my stereo.
i’m also very interested to hear statik’s newest work considering how he’s been working on the new Skinny Puppy album. perhaps it will give a few clues as to how it may sound (or not)…
below is a nifty banner advert I yanked from their site.

The Worst... is an eclectic mix of all of the various styles that Hilt delved into. The are bursts of punk fury like Staminate that lay somewhere at the convergence of John Zorn's Painkiller, Throbbing Gristle, and your favorite local hardcore band. There's cEvin's trademark assimilation of reggae and dub sounds on tracks like Roll One Up. Their half-mocking take on late 80s/early 90s alterna-rock previously heard on tracks like Superhoney shows through here on songs like Lyin on the Floor and Empty Day. Patsy and the brief Interlude offer a rare snippet of cEvin's lyrical electric guitar in what might've been what Center Bullet or Film would've sounded like had Skinny Puppy been a rock band. The 1986 Flu electro -madness classic Ichabod Crane features cEvin's vocals and lyrics written in 1976. Hilt always showed the band’s humorous side and this album continues that trend with tracks like Beefcake, which is sort of akin to Skinny Puppy riding along on a trip to the circus by a child who is afraid of clowns, and their take on piano balladeering, My Shit Behooves Me. Yet the honesty and poignancy of the 1996 demo No Lessons Learned, "dedicated to all friends lost", cannot be denied. The smoky barroom-bred Dig Me Colder, also a 96 demo, could easily be one of the best tracks ever to come out of this project.
Basically, this album has something for everyone and yet somehow feels like a coherent whole in the process. The Worst of... is anything but. It gives us a look at the heretofore unseen mass of private material that Hilt's LPs have only hinted at. If one is heading your way, be excited.

before anyone asks, i will not reveal what the Bonus is, but I’m sure you will be pleased when it arrives. so that everyone can be surprised when their package is opened, discussing the Bonus will be limited to a spoiler thread on the forum to be opened later.
it is hard to believe the ‘from the vault’ series is all but completed. on one hand it seems like we’ve been working on it forever and on the other hand it’s as if it just begun.
looking back, from my standpoint, the whole final product is superior to the original plan. cEvin & i spoke about SubCon creating a rare collection of music that would be collected and published but the project grew significantly from there. Download and platEAU produced new music, old songs were re-mastered, Brap6 saw new edits of old songs… heck, cEvin found stuff he forgot he even had. all in all a great project.
and you guys who bought the disc should take some credit too. by asking for and buying the Vault series it gave SubCon the motivation and the justification for the project. you guys made the project viable.
now, back to watching the mailbox…

The next bit of good news is that the last album in the Vault subscription series, Hilt's The Worst of the Flu, will be shipping momentarily. It's been over ten years since the last release from Hilt, and this album will be our first look into the early, raw days of the project. You can still order one here.

The ohGr team is currently in production of a new video from the forthcoming second album. Bill Morrison has been nice enough to give us a behind-the-scenes preview, including photos, design sketches, and video clips. The video (which I believe is to be for a song called Hylic Manouver) will lookingly be both visually amazing and quite timely. View the ohGr page here or check out the main Process Media Labs site.

over the last few months i’ve had two new jobs and had a ton of other various things (including death) that have kept me away. and in fact i’ve not really been away, but working behind the scenes keeping the wolves at bay. anyway, finally a scott update to take some of heat off of male-corey (or cory to those in the know).
so, some mixed updates for you…
CATCHING UP
Update::: scott
Hilt::: the worst of The Flu -- is in mastering and should be off to duplication before long. i’d expect a march ship.
Philth::: -- new LP this summer. more soon.
Vinyl::: Download, platEAU & Involution -- my copies came in a bit ago and i must say i’m very pleased with they way they turned out. it’s funny, as a one of the guys who worked on ‘em i shouldn’t have been surprised with the way they looked, but i was. imho, platEAU looks amazing expanded to vinyl size; the detail and impact was not as effective on the small printing afforded to cds. 3SF’s new cover is too cool (i wonder how Danny Carey likes it?) and all of Involution’s art is better than the original (again, imho). the funky colors on the vinyl itself are a blast to look at too.
you can still order copies from the Ants btw.
ohGr / cEvin Key -- the 2nd ohGr LP is not DOA and will see the light of day this year. if i had to guess, I’d say fall’ish this year. work has begun on cEvin’s 3rd solo LP for Metropolis too. there is no timetable on that release yet.

And in case all the excitement over this new SP collection caused you to forget about the final vault release, Hilt's Worst of the Flu, I'm here to let you know that that disc is close to entering the mastering phase and should find its way to us hot on the heels of the sure-to-be mindblowing Puppy release.

Answer- Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin. This info is contained in the interview on the official Tear Garden site.
2&3-The title of a European Tear Garden compilation is mentioned in entirety in a song by the Legendary Pink Dots. Name both the compilation and the song which mentions it.
Answer- The compilation is called Bouquet of Black Orchids. The song is called So Gallantly Screaming, the lyrics of which are available at this LPD site.
4-The song Turn Me On, Dead Man references a supposed secret message in what infamous Beatles song?
Answer- Revolution 9. The song supposedly said 'turn me on, dead man' when played backwards, part of the big supposed 'Paul is dead' conspiracy.
5-On what Tear Garden track does Mark Spybey perform?
Answer- Malice Through the Looking Glass. Contained in my FAQ.
6&7-Name two Tear Garden tracks that have been performed live in concert by members of the band.
Answer- Center Bullet, performed by Edward Ka-spel and cEvin Key live twice, and Isis Veiled, performed live by LPD for the past year or two.
8-What does the vinyl etching on the album Tired Eyes Slowly Burning say?
Answer- 'And even the vegetables screamed!', info easily available in Todd Z.'s Discography.
9-The song Message 3 is a sequel to what LPD track(s)?
Answer- A Message From Our Sponsor, which had been released in two different studio versions, hence the '3' of the Tear Garden track. You didn't have to go into the complex history, anyone who said 'Message From Our Sponsor' got it right.
10-Who directed the video for Sheila Liked the Rodeo?
Answer- William Morrison, whose auction for the guitar he played on tour with ohGr coincidentally ends today. Take a look here.
11-You and Me and Rainbows samples what famous singer performing They Can't Take That Away From Me?
Answer- Billie Holiday. This turned out to be the hardest question. Not too many people got it correctly. The fact is They Can't Take That Away From Me is such a standard that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of recordings of it. In fact Billie Holiday herself has four recordings of it in her discography. This particular one is from a 1937 radio transcription of her performing with Count Basie. This one was so difficult because the only place I know of where it has been discussed online was Epilogue, so the only way to research it would be to actually listen to a lot of recordings of the song. My hat's off to anyone who even tried to do so. Btw, one person mentioned that they thought there was another version of the same song included immediately before hers in YAMAR. That's actually part of the same performance, just slowed down. I'll bet they were manipulating the tape speed 'live' like an instrument while they inserted these things into the song.
12-Who performs bass synth on the track entitled The Tear Garden?
Answer- Wilhelm Schroeder or Bill Leeb. Either name is considered correct. This info was printed on the sleeve of the original 12" and is once again right in Todd's Discog.
13-The cover artist of To Be an Angel Blind... performs under a different name as part of what musical entity?
Answer- Nurse With Wound. Babs Santini is a pseudonym of Steve Stapleton.
14-The name The Strong and Whining Toad is a play on the title of what song?
Answer- The Long and Winding Road. Just about everyone got this one right.
15-Name the actor who starred in the title role of the radio play sampled in You and Me and Rainbows.
Answer- Herbert Marshall, who played the title role of the radio show 'The Man Called X'. This was the other really difficult one that not many people got correctly. A few people answered Orson Welles and apparently thought that I was referring to 'War of the Worlds', which the Sample Lists lists as being sampled in this song. However, War of the Worlds doesn't have a title role, unless someone was playing the 'War'. I'll grant you that in his later years Orson Welles could likely have pulled off such a part, and as much as I'd like the guy who not only directed Citizen Kane but voiced Unicron to be an answer in my contest, it's just wrong. The sample I was referring to was the long section of spoken dialogue and music so beautifully woven into the mix at the end of the song. This section happens to include the announcer's outro for the program, where he gives not only the name of the show but of a few of the people in it. A couple of web searchs of these terms would be all one needed to find the answer (which is how I found it in the first place, after all).
January 10, 2003
Also of interest is a new review of Eye Spy With My Little Eye by Gavin Lees. Read it here.
Finally, don't forget the nifty contest I made below. So far I've only gotten a couple of entries, so even if you can't get em all you still have a good chance at winning something.
January 8, 2003
The entire contest is based upon our whim and discretion and subject to change or transformation at our will. I know, we're fascist basards. Entering the contest guarantees you nothing. The winners will be chosen randomly from the correct entries. This process will occur behind closed doors, will involve various secret incantations, and is not up for debate. If no one gets all of the questions correct, we will pick from the entries with the most correct answers. So you can enter even if you don't have all of the answers. By entering you agree to allowing me to call you up unannounced in the middle of the night to discuss the TV show What's Happenin'. We won't reveal your personal information to anyone else or sign you up for mail-order catalogs (unless we happen to dislike you). The correct answers are decided by myself. There is no higher authority. One entry allowed per person please. Repeat, one entry per person. Not per email address. Anyone who submits more than one or uses multiple email accounts will be eliminated from the competition and legally barred from ever buying another Skinny Puppy CD.
To enter, send me an email at clarknova@iop.com with the subject 'litany contest' (this is important, otherwise your email will likely be assumed to be another piece of spam informing me how to earn a degree over the phone and ignored as such). To count, your email must include your full name, email for prize notification and complete current mailing address. The deadline for entries is Saturday, January 18th (based on Litany/EST's date). Here's the trivia questions, have fun:::
