Carbohydrates

• Carbohydrates are organic compounds with a 1:2:1 ratio of carbon:hydrogen:oxygen.

• General empirical formula: (CH2O)n

• The three classes of CHOs

  • monosaccharides
  • oligosaccharides
  • polysaccharides

• If it has the suffix -ose, it’s a carbohydrate.
