I have been a Civil War Re-enactor for the past 15 years. I was appointed Regimental
Surgeon 7 years ago at the Battle of Horse Landing in Palatka Florida. I was assigned
to the 3rd Florida Co. A, which was commanded at the time by Captain Andy Smith.
This unit is now commanned by Captain Pat Adkins and is one of the largest Infantry
Companies in the southeastern United States. This unit also portrays the 35th Mass.
Infantry Unit when the company does a Union impression. Last year, our company was
instrumental in forming the 2nd Battalion in Hardy's Brigade and I was assigned as
Battalion Surgeon. Unfortunatly this Battalion was short lived and I became the Surgeon
for both the 3rd Fl. Co. A. and the Partisan Rangers ( a Confederate Cavarly unit from
Middleburg Florida commanded by Captain Leon Tillman). I have my own re-enactment
horse (Reba), which allows me to portray a mounted Surgeon. This also gives me better
mobility on the battlefield to provide increased medical protection to the re-enactor.
The 3rd Fl. Co. A is a member of the Florida Division for the Department of the Gulf which
our medical unit is part of and works closely with.. When we are not with the Department
Of The Gulf, we are with the Partisan Rangers (the 2nd Florida Independent Cavalry unit)
which is a member of Hardys Brigade

When I first became a re-enactor, I was an artilleryman with the 1st Clay County Confederate
Artillery, which is the Cairns Battery in the First Confederate Division. I became Chief of Piece
of that unit holding the rank of 1st Sergeant. I still keep my ties with this unit under the command
of Captain Farrar, and provide the unit medical protection as needed.
I now have expanded into the field of Revolutionary War Medicine. I also portray a Civilian Physician assigned to the British or Contenental Army. Our small unit consists of one Battalion Surgeon, One Assistant Surgeon, one Steward, six Nurses, and two Stretcher Barrers, who work with us on a regular basis. When we work with the 1st Battalion unders Hardy's Brigade, another three Surgeons, 2 Stewards and ten Nurses makes us one of the largest re-enactment medical group in the southeast.
