Cochran, born May 1, 1854, LaGrange, died November 19, 1909, Chattanooga, Tennessee. He
was a clerk in the express office when he met Laura Jane Small. They lived in Lampassas around
1895. In January 1904 they were living at 249 West 109th, New York. After a period in Atlanta,
they moved again, this time to Chattanooga, where Charles suffered a stroke and then a heart
attack. He married on March 13, 1879, in Houston,

February 20, 1859, in Knoxville, Tennessee, died July 26, 1941, Lake Worth, Florida. When
Charles became ill with malaria in Lampassas, she gave music lessons to help support the family.
After his death, whe lived for a time in New York, France, Atlanta and Florida, living with her
youngest daughter. While in France she worked as a seamstress for a fashion house.

involved in the banking business in Houston for over 40 years. He organized the South Texas
National Bank, and served as cashier and Vice President. He was also a director of the Houston
Post, director of the South Texas Commercial Bank, vice chairman and member of the board of
trustees of Rice Institute, and president of the Merchants and Planters Oil Mill. He was active in
the establishment of Rice Institute. He was an active member of the First Methodist Church and
served as a steward there. On October 20, 1880, in Huntsville, Texas, he married
ELIZABETH SMITH, daughter of Mary Brent Hoke and Hosea Hildreth Smith,
born October
11, 1859, died May 1, 1941. Dr. H.H. Smith was the first superintendent of Houston
Independent School District. She was a member of the D.A.R. and U.D.C., and had an active
interest in cultural affairs. At the time of her death she was a member of Christ Episcopal church.

of the founders of the Texas Bankers Association, and was its first secretary. At that time he was
president and cashier of Central National Bank. He was also the author of Things Taxable. After
leaving banking he became involved in real estate.
