FIRST GENERATION
NEHEMIAH McASHAN/McSHAN, son of Richard
McAshan, born before 1755, died after
1800. He lived in Buckingham County from at least 1769 to 1787, according to surveyor's plats,
tithable and tax lists. It appears he then moved to Montgomery County, North Carolina, where he
is listed in court records, the 1790 and 1800 census records. According to Col. John Agee
Booker of Cumberland, Virginia (1839-1925), there were eleven children in the family, however,
at this point only the names of ten are known. He married
KEZIAH (possibly Elizabeth) CHAMBERS, daughter of William Chambers, born
before 1755,
died after 1800.

NOTE: The 1782 Buckingham County personal property tax list has Nehemiah with 8 slaves, 3 horses, and 11 cattle. The slaves were Peter, Isaac, Patrick, Phillip, Dick, Sarah, Mage, and Sam. In 1783 he had 2 horses, 15 cattle, and 6 slaves - Patrick, Jane, Leth, Magge, Dick, and Sam.
NOTE: In Our Southern Ancestors, by Thelma Faye Cain Prince, she quotes the family Bible of Robert Moore (son of Keziah McAshan). According to this Bible, Nehemiah's wife was named Keziah. It gives Richard McAshan as the father of Nehemiah McAshan, Sr., and William Chambers as the father of Keziah Chambers McAshan. Also listed is Betsy Watkins, but it is unclear whether she was the wife of Richard McAshan or William Chambers.
There was a Richard McShan/McAshan in Buckingham County, who died there in 1804. In 1764 Richard witnessed a deed in Albemarle County. From 1750-1757 he owned land in Amelia County. Richard McAshan lost 199 lbs of tobacco in the Eastermost River Warehouse, Gloucester County, in 1749.
Early tax records of Buckingham County also show a William Chambers from at least 1773. On December 10, 1782, 125 acres on Arthur's Creek, a branch of the Slate River, was surveyed for him. He died before 1787, as the land tax for that year was paid by his estate.
